Is the Janoel Model 24 the right egg incubator for you?

Poultry Australia recommends the Janoel Model 24 if you’re looking for a reliable egg incubator that can automatically incubate and hatch up to 24 chicken, 18 duck, or 48 quail eggs.

The easy-to-use design and automatic features make the Janoel Model 24 an ideal first egg incubator, or an excellent choice if you’d like to upgrade to a more user-friendly model.

The Janoel Model 24 has been Poultry Australia’s best-selling egg incubator since 2013, making it a popular and dependable choice.

When your Janoel Model 24 egg incubator arrives

Your Janoel Model 24 egg incubator will arrive fully assembled.

All of the features including the thermostat, fan-forced air circulation, and egg turning will work automatically when the incubator is switched on. This helps you achieve an excellent hatch rate whether you’re an incubation expert or incubating eggs for the first time.

The instructions that come with the Janoel Model 24 are informative and easy to understand.

Using your Janoel Model 24 egg incubator

When you’re ready to start incubating, the eggs can be placed in the automatic egg-turning tray. The tray can be easily adjusted to fit all egg sizes. This means you'll always be ready to incubate small quail eggs to large goose eggs without needing to purchase different sized egg-turning trays.

Your Janoel Model 24 will automatically maintain the temperature and turn the eggs throughout the incubation process. This means you can enjoy the incubation experience without needing to regularly monitor or adjust the incubator.

The Janoel Model 24 has a reliable water channel system to control the humidity. The main water channel can be refilled using the cleverly designed filling hole and water bottle (included). This means you can quickly top up the water channel every few days without opening the lid.

During the hatch

Three days before the chicks hatch, the eggs will stop being turned and humidity will be increased. The automatic egg-turning tray has been designed so it's easy to remove from the incubator at this time. The eggs can then be placed on the spacious hatching tray.

The humidity is increased by adding water to the second water channel in the base of the Janoel Model 24. The second water channel also has an external filling hole, so it can be refilled without opening the lid.

There will be plenty of room for everyone to watch the chicks hatch through the large, wraparound viewing window.

Seen a similar-looking egg incubator elsewhere?

Unfortunately, there are many online sellers who copy Poultry Australia’s product descriptions and use them to sell cheaper, lower-quality egg incubators. Over one-third of enquiries we receive are from Australians who are experiencing issues or need support after purchasing a similar-looking incubator elsewhere.

By making a purchase from Poultry Australia, you can be confident you're getting a quality egg incubator from an Australian company that has been an authorised Janoel retailer since 2013.

Every egg incubator sold by Poultry Australia comes with a one-year factory-backed warranty, access to genuine spare parts, and reliable long-term after-sales support.

  • Should I purchase an FRD-10 egg candler with my Janoel Model 24?
You’ll be given the option to purchase an FRD-10 egg candler with your Janoel Model 24 egg incubator when placing an order on the Poultry Australia website. An egg candler is a tool that uses a bright light and a special focus beam to observe the developing embryo inside an egg. Most people who order a Janoel Model 24 egg incubator also purchase an FRD-10 egg candler. An egg candler is optional, but having one provides the following benefits: You can watch the embryos develop throughout the incubation process. It’s always an exciting process to observe! You can check whether all the eggs are fertile early in the incubation process. This means you’re alerted to any fertility issues early on, rather than waiting until the hatch date. Knowing how many of the eggs are fertile also helps you plan for how many chicks you’ll need to take care of. You’ll be able to remove infertile eggs from the incubator. This prevents infertile eggs from rotting. Rotting eggs can smell and may even break open, creating a mess in your egg incubator that can be difficult to clean. Removing infertile eggs will also create more room on the hatching tray for the chicks. Any eggs that don’t hatch can be candled to see when the embryos stopped developing. This can help diagnose potential issues and improve future hatch rates. Before setting eggs in your incubator, they can be candled to check for hairline cracks. Eggs with hairline cracks shouldn’t be incubated. Hairline cracks are difficult to spot with the naked eye but become clearly visible as white lines when using an egg candler.
  • Is there a package that includes the Janoel Model 24 and a brooder?
Poultry Australia sells a package deal called the Family Package. This package includes one Janoel Model 24 egg incubator, one FRD-10 egg candler and the brooder equipment needed to raise the chicks. It can be viewed on our Package Deals page.
  • Is the Janoel Model 24 suitable for someone who hasn't used an incubator before?
The Janoel Model 24 is an excellent choice if it’s your first time using an egg incubator. The automatic features, user-friendly design, visibility of the process, and easy-to-follow instructions make it a great egg incubator to use when learning how to incubate eggs.
  • Can I watch the chicks hatch?
Yes, you’ll have a fantastic view of the hatch. Because the Janoel Model 24 has a large, wraparound viewing window, you can watch the chicks hatch from every side of the incubator. It also means there is plenty of room for everyone to watch simultaneously.
  • Is the Janoel Model 24 suitable for duck, quail, turkey, guinea fowl, and goose eggs?
Yes, the Janoel Model 24 egg incubator can incubate and hatch all poultry species. The approximate total egg capacity for different poultry species is as follows: 24 large chicken eggs 24 guinea fowl eggs 48 quail eggs 18 duck eggs 18 turkey eggs 10 goose eggs
  • Is the Janoel Model 24 a good choice for a school?
The Janoel Model 24 egg incubator is a popular choice for school groups, as the incubation process and hatch can be viewed from all sides of the incubator through the wraparound window. The great view of the hatch offered by the Janoel Model 24 egg incubator can be seen in the video below. The automatic features also mean the Janoel Model 24 can be left in the classroom to operate automatically over the weekend.
  • Can I incubate less than 24 eggs at once?
Yes, you can incubate any number of eggs up to the maximum capacity. Chicks like to have company, so it’s best to incubate at least a few eggs during each incubation if possible.
  • Can I incubate different poultry species together using the Janoel Model 24?
Yes, the Janoel Model 24 has been designed so you can incubate different poultry species at the same time. The automatic egg-turning tray can be easily adjusted to automatically turn different egg sizes during the same incubation. The eggs will need to be set in the incubator at intervals so all the species hatch at the same time. This way the eggs can stop being turned and the humidity raised three days before all the chicks are due to hatch. For example: Chicken eggs require 21 days of incubation before they hatch Japanese quail require 17 days of incubation before they hatch This means you would set the chicken eggs in the incubator first, then set the quail eggs four days later. This way the chickens and quail will both hatch at the same time.
  • Is the Janoel Model 24 an incubator and hatcher?
Yes, the Janoel Model 24 is a combined egg incubator and hatcher. This means the Janoel Model 24 can incubate the eggs and hatch the chicks. You won’t need to purchase other accessories for the incubation or hatch stages; everything comes as standard.
  • Can the incubation temperature be adjusted?
Yes, the thermostat in the Janoel Model 24 egg incubator can be adjusted to an accuracy of 0.1°C. The temperature is pre-set to reach 38.0°C (chicken egg incubation temperature) as soon as the incubator is switched on. It’s easy to adjust the temperature if you’re incubating a poultry species that requires a different incubation temperature. Simply press the Set button and then use the plus or minus buttons to raise or lower the incubation temperature.
  • What are the benefits of fan-forced air circulation?
The Janoel Model 24 egg incubator has a high-quality, ball-bearing fan that will be operational whenever the incubator is switched on. The fan and high-accuracy thermometer help deliver great hatch rates by maintaining a precise and stable temperature for all of the eggs during incubation.
  • How does the Janoel Model 24 manage ventilation?
The Janoel Model 24 egg incubator has an adjustable air vent. The air vent has been carefully designed to allow a specific amount of fresh air to enter the incubator. This helps the incubator maintain a stable temperature and humidity while optimising oxygen and carbon dioxide levels during incubation. The air vent has a sliding mechanism allowing it to be fully closed during a power outage to preserve heat.
  • How does the automatic egg-turning system in the Janoel Model 24 work?
The Janoel Model 24 gently turns the eggs 12 times per day. The egg-turning is fully automatic and will work as soon as your Janoel Model 24 egg incubator is switched on. When setting eggs in your Janoel Model 24 egg incubator, they will need to be placed in the automatic egg-turning tray. The automatic egg-turning tray has egg dividers that can be adjusted to fit the exact size of the eggs you’re incubating. Adjusting the egg dividers is quick and simple. The egg-turning motor will then roll the eggs back and forth along the egg tray at a slow and constant rate. Turning the eggs helps each embryo access nutrients within its egg and expel waste during development. Turning also helps to keep each developing embryo in the centre of its egg. If an egg isn’t turned correctly, the egg yolk, or the developing embryo attached to the yolk, could touch and stick to the shell membranes. In most cases, this would result in the embryo dying during incubation. The slow and constant automatic egg-turning system in the Janoel Model 24 egg incubator ensures this does not happen. Another important design feature of the automatic egg-turning system in the Janoel Model 24 is the back-and-forth motion of the automatic egg-turning tray. The back-and-forth motion ensures the chalazae (the membranes that help suspend the yolk and developing embryo in the centre of the egg) aren’t twisted or damaged while the eggs are being turned. This also ensures the embryos stay in the centre of the egg to optimise hatch rates. The eggs should not be turned during the final three days of incubation. Turning the eggs during the final three days of incubation would disturb the chicks as they prepare to hatch. The automatic egg-turning tray can simply be lifted out of the incubator and the eggs placed directly on the hatching tray at this time. The Janoel Model 24 has a spacious hatching tray that provides plenty of space for the chicks to hatch.
  • Why is humidity important and how is it controlled by the Janoel Model 24?
Humidity is one of the four main factors that an egg incubator needs to manage along with temperature, ventilation, and egg turning to ensure a high hatch rate. If the average humidity is too low over the incubation period, the eggs will lose too much moisture. This will result in small chicks that may be too weak to hatch. If the humidity is too high over the incubation period, the eggs won’t lose enough moisture. This can result in overly large chicks that don’t have enough space to successfully pip out of their shells. The humidity must also be managed while the chicks are hatching to ensure the shell membranes are soft enough for the chicks to break through, while not being so humid that the chicks drown inside their eggs. The Janoel Model 24 has an effective and reliable water channel system to control the humidity inside the egg incubator. This system uses two water channels in the base of the incubator. The main channel should contain water at all times, while the second water channel should be filled three days before the chicks hatch. The surface area of water exposed in the main water channel has been carefully designed to produce a specific amount of evaporation when heated to an incubation temperature of 38.0°C. This evaporation, combined with the fan-forced air circulation and ventilation through the air vent will maintain the humidity at an appropriate level throughout the incubation period. This will ensure the chicks are the optimum weight and size when they are ready to hatch. Filling the second water channel three days before the chicks hatch will increase the surface area of water exposed inside the egg incubator. This results in more water evaporating. The additional evaporation raises the humidity inside the egg incubator by an appropriate amount to soften the shell membranes ready for the chicks to hatch. This reliable and effective humidity system helps the Janoel Model 24 egg incubator achieve excellent hatch rates.
  • How often should I refill the water channels?
The main water channel will need to be refilled around every three days to ensure it doesn’t run dry. You might need to refill the main water channel more regularly if the room temperature or humidity is low. The second water channel should only be filled three days before the chicks hatch (for example, on the 18th day of incubation for chicken eggs). Poultry Australia recommends refilling both water channels once per day while the chicks are hatching to be certain they don’t run dry. Both water channels have a water-refilling hole on the side of the egg incubator. This means the water channels can be refilled quickly and easily without opening the lid of the incubator. Your Janoel Model 24 egg incubator will come with a water bottle designed to refill the water channels using the water-filling holes.
  • Does the Janoel Model 24 have a hygrometer?
The Janoel Model 24 egg incubator doesn’t have a built-in hygrometer. However, a hygrometer can be placed in the Janoel Model 24 egg incubator if you’d like to use one. Poultry Australia recommends the Digital egg incubator hygrometer and thermometer available to purchase on our website for $28.00 if you’d like to monitor the humidity.
  • What happens after the chicks hatch?
The chicks will spend the first 12 to 36 hours of their life inside the egg incubator. During this time, they will dry off and fluff up. The chicks will go through short bursts of energy where they explore their surroundings and then sleep. This is normal after the exhausting hatching process. You’ll be able to observe the chicks' first hours of life from every side of the incubator through the large, wraparound window. The Janoel Model 24 has been designed to keep the chicks safe after hatching. All fast-moving and heated components are behind a barrier to keep the chicks safe. The Janoel Model 24 also has a grippy hatching tray to prevent the chicks from injuring their legs. Once all the chicks look dry and their feathers have fluffed up, they can be moved from the incubator into their brooder. If you don’t have a brooder, you can purchase the equipment you’ll need with a Janoel Model 24 egg incubator in a package on Poultry Australia’s package deals page.
  • Is the Janoel Model 24 easy to clean?
The Janoel Model 24 egg incubator has been designed to be easy to clean after each hatch. All of the electronic components are housed in the top section/lid of the incubator. This means all of the components that require the most cleaning such as the base and hatching tray can be separated and soaked in soapy water.
  • Is the Janoel Model 24 energy efficient?
The Janoel Model 24 egg incubator is highly energy efficient. The power consumption is less than 85 watts. This makes it affordable to use regularly. The full power specifications are as follows: Voltage: 220-240V Frequency: 50-60Hz Power: <85W
  • What are the dimensions of the Janoel Model 24?
The Janoel Model 24 egg incubator is 43 cm long, 29 cm wide and 22.5 cm high. It’s a convenient size to sit on a piece of furniture in your home, garage or shed. The space inside the incubator for the eggs and chicks is 40 cm long, 27 cm wide and 11 cm high.
  • Should I upgrade to the larger Janoel Model 48 egg incubator?
Upgrading to the Janoel Model 48 egg incubator provides the following additional benefits: double the egg capacity built-in hygrometer built-in day counter Poultry Australia recommends the Janoel Model 24 if you’re confident the egg capacity will be enough for your needs. You can always place a hygrometer inside the Janoel Model 24 egg incubator if you’d like to measure the humidity. It’s also simple to calculate the number of days without having a day counter. You’ll simply need to write down the date when the eggs were set in the incubator or set a reminder on your phone. If you might outgrow the egg capacity of the Janoel Model 24, then choosing the larger Janoel Model 48 egg incubator is likely to be a good investment.
