Frequently asked questions
Q. Do I need to insert the sensor probes through an air vent?
Either the entire unit can be placed inside your egg incubator, or the sensor probes can be inserted through an air vent.
Poultry Australia recommends placing the entire unit inside the egg incubator and viewing the digital display through a window. If your egg incubator doesn’t have a window, the lid can be opened to check the temperature and humidity readings. The display on the Digital egg incubator Hygrometer and thermometer updates every 10 seconds. This allows enough time to check the readings after the lid has been opened.
Alternatively, the sensor probes can be placed through an air vent. The air vent would need to be 15mm wide for the humidity sensor probe to fit through or 5mm wide for the smaller temperature sensor probe. Always check the instructions for your egg incubator before inserting a cable through the air vent, as it may not be recommended for some makes or models.
Q. Where should the sensor probes be placed in the egg incubator?
Ideally, the temperature and humidity sensor probes should be placed near the top of the egg that is closest to the centre of your egg incubator.
The Digital egg incubator hygrometer and thermometer sensor probes are lightweight, and the cables are long and flexible. This makes it easy to position them inside your egg incubator. You might like to use some Blu Tack to secure the sensor probes to the automatic egg-turning tray or another part of your egg incubator.
Q. How do I record temperature and humidity fluctuations in my egg incubator?
The Digital egg incubator hygrometer and thermometer has a MAX/MIN button that can be pressed to check the maximum and minimum temperature and humidity recordings since the last reset. This means you can check whether the incubation temperature or relative humidity fluctuates over time without needing to constantly monitor your egg incubator.
The maximum and minimum recordings can be reset by holding down the MAX/MIN button for three seconds.
Q. What is the advantage of the IN/OUT feature?
The IN/OUT feature allows you to check whether the room temperature is within the recommended operating range for your egg incubator without needing to remove the temperature sensor probe from the incubator. This is possible as the Digital egg incubator hygrometer & thermometer has two thermometers. There is a temperature sensor probe for measuring incubation temperature, and a second thermometer located inside the main body of the unit behind the digital display. Please note that the IN/OUT feature can only be used if the temperature sensor probe is inserted through an air vent.
Q. Can I use the Digital Egg Incubator Hygrometer & Thermometer to check the temperature accuracy in my egg incubator?
Poultry Australia only recommends using the Masterhatch high accuracy egg incubator thermometer for checking or recalibrating the incubation temperature. The Masterhatch high accuracy egg incubator thermometer has been specifically designed for checking the temperature accuracy of egg incubators and each one is tested to an accuracy of ±0.1°C.
Q. What is a hygrometer and do I need to use one in my egg incubator?
A hygrometer is a useful tool to check the relative humidity inside your egg incubator. The main advantage of using a hygrometer is that it can warn you if the water channels in the base of your egg incubator run dry and need to be refilled. If you’re already refilling the water channels regularly and as per the manufacturer’s instructions, a hygrometer can be considered a helpful but optional accessory.
If you are attempting a dry incubation, meaning the water channels are left empty or not filled as regularly as the incubator manufacturer recommends, a hygrometer should always be used to ensure the relative humidity level does not drop too low. Please note that Poultry Australia does not usually endorse the dry incubation method.
Q. What should the relative humidity be inside my egg incubator?
Most egg incubator manufacturers recommend targeting an average relative humidity somewhere in the 45% to 60% range until three days before the hatch. The target relative humidity then usually increases to between 60% and 75% for the final three days of incubation and during the hatch. Different egg incubator manufacturers may recommend slightly different average relative humidity targets, so always check the instructions that came with your incubator.
